Purpose
Want to work on a file organization structure for computer files. Find a good folder structure, possibly take advantage of tags. Want to plan how to keep all my computers synced with the same content using iCloud Drive, Desktop, and Documents. If files are not synced by iCloud, like server setups or various scripts, find out how to keep them in a repository like Git.

GitHub
GitHub local repositories stored in Documents folder which is synced to iCloud. I try to keep all repositories in this folder synced with local git and GitHub.
Raindrop.io
Looking into raindrop to track bookmarks and maybe combine it with Obsidian. This video may help: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=902nV-gGb9U
Read something about using Omnivore https://omnivore.app to get raindrops into Obsidian.
Napkin
Nicole van der Hoeven on Napkin idea capture application. Interesting idea that breaks ideas/thoughts out of the Obsidian paradigm and keeps the scope very tight to just individual thoughts on an individual “napkin”.#review https://youtube.com/watch?v=p2E3gRXiLYY&si=q8fs4ACfcaUh4yCk
DEVONThink
https://www.devontechnologies.com/apps/devonthink Possible Finder replacement app that turns file storage into a database, allowing file metadata, tagging, file automation, OCR, etc.
Not feeling great about this one. Files are stored in a database so you can’t access files in important ways: Finder, iCloud, etc.
Taggy Tagger
Looked at this Mac tagging app. Seems interesting but seems to have very little momentum. https://taggytagger.com I signed up to join the public beta of the app.
Livescribe Notes
Mark these notes up with a checkbox to show which note they were OCR’d and copied to Livescribe notes should have date/time stamps as headings
Obsidian
Capture virtually all information in this app. Notes are divided by their type in folders:
- Daily Notes
- Notes (All notes go here that aren’t in another category)
- Files (Attachments/References)
- Projects (Top level notes that represent a unique project)
- Templates (Templater templates)
Home notes is used as a place to put links to frequently used notes. May want to do this as a#canvas at some point.
Using#checklist plugin to track to dos. Trying not to clog things up by only turning ideas into to dos when they are actually critical, not just wishes. This will require some other way to resurface items I want to work on via a review process. Maybe simple tagging or some plugin.
- Take a look at Tasks plugin which may be similar to#checklist ✅ 2023-12-07
#quartz
Using Quartz and GitHub to publish the content of this vault to https://kb.ecoplunge.com. Only notes with the file property “Publish” set to “True” show up.
Readwise
Need to research. Sounds close enough to Omnivore I’m sticking with Omnivore.
Omnivore
Using omnivore to capture links to YouTube videos and articles I’ve read/to read.
Quotes
I created a system that uses one quote per note, with all quote notes stored in the References/Quotes folder. The file name is the quote or a truncated version of the quote. The author, quote, and source of the quote is stored in meta data fields, making it easily queryable.
The Quotes master note uses dataview queries to show pinned, new, archived, and all quotes in different blocks. A quote note can be archived by adding a file property of “archived” set to “true”.
The daily notes template has a Vault Quote of the Day at the very top, generated by a dataview query that picks a random quote note from the Quotes folder.
Folders, Notes, References, Files
Folders in Obsidian float to the top of the folder browser. This allows me to have a series of note folder that have a singular context, e.g. Quotes, Omnivore, Projects. This folder arrangement can shrink or grow based on need.
All general notes (or uncategorized) notes are in the root level of the vault. These will stay there unless they have an obvious singular context, allowing them to be put into folders. This methodology allows for top down hierarchy alongside freeform storage.
A good example of this is a “Work” folder. I may have clients I work for and it seems obvious that these items go in a work folder. But I also have ideas that are work related but are personal for now. So a freeform organization lets me tag these ideas as work but not necessarily have to shove them into a work folder. This leads to a clearer view that my client “work” folder really should be named “Clients” negating the need for a “work” folder altogether.
The content in Obsidian is primarily focused on keeping my thoughts, ideas, and brain history. When other’s people’s thoughts and content is added to Obsidian, I store them in the References folder. This makes clear distinction between content that I found that supported my thinking and my actual thoughts.
The Files folder somewhat follows this idea, in that files I add into the vault are “references”. However, I’m not strictly distinguishing between files I made and those from others. Maybe this will change in the future, but for now I don’t see a reason to create a distinction at the folder level. Maybe this is worthy of tagging these resources but I’m not sure how that would work.
Tags
Tags allow for an addition of freeform metadata. They can help to find related content across notes, files and folders. I try to tag liberally.
We also have the option in Obsidian to use a plugin to view tags similarly to how folders work. It’s a bastard version of a relational database. Things on a computer are always stored in folders, but tags allow us to find related content across hierarchical structures. Obsidian, with it’s strong tag support and plugins makes this easy. I’d also like to adopt this structure in the Finder, but I don’t know of a Tag FIle Browser for the Mac. Still, I’m going to put some effort into tagging my files in the hopes that someday we’ll have a more flexible Finder that’s not just a folder traversing mechanism.
Receipts
Receipts get scanned into Dropbox/ScanSnap/Inbox. This should be done as close to the day of the transaction as possible. If sone the day of, the file date will at least be correct. They are then named and sorted into the Receipts folder in Dropbox/ScanSnap/Receipts as I get to them.
-
The goal is to check email daily. Need to decide on a system that deals with what to keep and delete, and when to unsubscribe from email senders. The fewer emails in my inbox the more likely I am to keep it clean.
-
Make to do and archive: this needs to be a high priority. Every email that needs actions taken needs to be immediately turned into to do’s amd archived.
-
Tagging: to keep with the tagging I’m attempting in Obsidian and Finder, tagging emails seems like a good thing to do. Then archived email becomes easier to search.
